Description

1968 Hobie - Corky Carroll Super Mini Model 7' 4"

As the short board revolution began to pick up momentum in 1968, Hobie created the successful Corky Carroll - Super Mini. Not only was this board shorter than the mini built in '67 but it incorporated a deep-V-bottom making the it even more maneuverable.

Hobie's psychedelic label was also a sign of the times as the hippy 'Flower Power' was in full bloom. This board was influential in promoting outrageous tie dye and acid splash designs. The artwork on this board is a cross between acid splash and tiger stripes that were all the rage in the late 60s.

This board comes untouched, still in original condition. The original Hobie wishbone fin is very rare in itself and alone is worth quite a bit to collectors even with the hole for an early leash.

Corky Carroll was Hobie's stand-out team rider. He won the United States surfing championships in 1966, 1967 and 1969. He also won a number of other major events during this period including the Peru International (1967), Santa Cruz Pro-Am (1968) and the prestigious Smirnoff Pro-Am (1969).

Carroll was the world's first professional surfer, as he became the first to receive prizes of monetary value in 1965. Corky appeared in dozens of surf movies throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The most notable of course, was The Endless Summer (1966). He was also featured in such classics as Pacific Vibrations (1970) and Five Summer Stories (1972).

Corky was a ham and a natural, and appeared on several television shows and commercials like The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show and What's my Line? He also recorded a number of albums in the 1970 and 80s. In addition, he's written dozens of articles and books as well. Corky is certainly a stand out character in surfing's rich history.

We found no record of a Super Mini showing up at auction.

This splendid example of late 60s surf culture stick can be seen in the full color hardcover coffee table book, Vintage Surfboards II, available later this year.

Pre-auction estimate: $1,500.-$2,000. No Reserve
